Gasworks at Night

Last week Reid texted me that he was at Gasworks Park, right at the end of my street, to take some night pictures at about 10pm. I was definitely in my pj's drinking a glass of wine (probably), but I had recently been thinking I wanted to take some photos. However, I also have been ..well...kinda lazy. So this provided the perfect impetus for me to get out and take some shots. Not alcohol, although I did that too before I left. Just kidding. The evening was cool and partly cloudy, but those clouds were moving pretty fast. It makes for some nice effects. Here's a picture of a serendipitous plane trail over part of the 'works.

lucky plane trail and fast moving clouds

Here's the gasworks. I lightened it a little in post-processing and made it black and white. Notice the cloud streaks. Sweeeet.

After taking a bunch (they are in my Night Photog set), Reid and I started playing around with the longer exposures and lights. In this one, Reid ran down the cement arches and lit the flash on each one, while I walked backward through the arches spiraling my headlamp towards the camera. Can you imagine what bystanders were thinking? We are such nerds.

Nerd. Out.

Titles (very belated. but I would argue still funny.)

I gave a talk at the Graduate Climate Conference back in April of this year. It was a review about geoengineering, with a little of my "research" sprinkled in. I was completely stressed and nervous about it. But, instead of practicing and finalizing my slides, I spent my time worrying about what the title should be. I enlisted the help of my car-mates on the way down to Pack Forest (the site for the conference) and luckily Stu really stepped it up. Here's what he came up with:

My favorites are:
Geoengineering: Now with more volcano action!!
Geoengineering the stratosphere: Stratospheric sulfate injections to the stratosphere, focusing on the stratosphere
and finally,
Space Cannons: Fuck Yeah!

And here is what I ended up with - I was too chicken to do anything too crazy, even though the conference was only grad students :)

booooring.

Cuteness

My little sister, Carly, is learning how to write. I got a card in the mail from her last week! It is so terribly cute.

I mean, check out the candies taped to the inside! It says "Dear Kelly, I hope you are feeling better Love Carly"

Here's a pic of her (5) and Will (just turned 4) that my dad sent me:

Also, yesterday I received an email from my bf Caitlin, from back east. She just had a wee little baby ~5 weeks ago. Here is the picture she sent me of Ryan (he is wearing the cute little outfit I gave him):

Cuteness Overload!

Spring Break 2009!

Oooh yeah, went to Cancun and had an awesome time doing shots and dancing in the soap suds with my top off. Actually, that is so not believable because I am not in college anymore (not that I EVER did that). I actually went to Europe for 10 days and took in some culture and visited some friends. No, ok, actually I just stayed in Seattle. And my Mom came to visit. We had a great time! We went to Gasworks park, and the UW Medical center, and QFC, and UW Sports Medicine, and the Ram Pub in UVillage!! We watched movies and basketball! I slept, she read books! I cried, she made me feel better. I hurt, she gave me narcotics. It was da bomb. What a vacation!

Now for vacation photos. Whenever I visit with family, I always take a before picture of my knees, just in case they Tonya Harding my ass. Well, here is my before:

my unblemished knee (my left)...

AND HERE IS MY AFTER:
look at my tiny quad!

I think my mom put me to sleep, cut my knee open, installed some ligaments, and wrapped it up! Ok maybe not. I had knee surgery, done by surgeons in a hospital, and got myself a new ACL and MCL. So I want to thank my awesome mom for being here and wonderful friends who visited and helped out as I convalesced after my mom left. You guys rule! Especially Libby - if becoming a Nobel Prize winner doesn't work out, you could definitely go into home care and care management. :) Also, I have received 2, count them, TWO Edible Arrangements, from uncles/aunts and high school friends back East. Thank you, it made my week!! You all made it possible for me to have a bionic leg! [cue Bionic Woman music, I don't know how to onomatopoeia it (this is the spelling the Merriam-Webster told me?) because my left knee now has 3 ligament grafts in it!]

There are more "vacation" photos on flickr because for some reason I made a knee surgery set. I'm thinkin' weekly pictures of my leg with a quarter for scale? To measure my swelling decrease and quad muscle size? Too much?

Seattle Public Library and invisible people

Finally made it to the Seattle Public Library. I've heard so many good things and it lived up to my expectations. Such a neat building. Here are a few of my favorite photos

And finally my very favorite
Seattle Public Library

Now, somehow at lunch the other day we started talking about Nicole being invisible (long, random story, typical of our tangential lunch banter). Then we also talked about the fact that the above photo looks like it should be an album cover. Well, I guess Reid had some extra time because here is the album cover for the album Invisible Woman :-)
